I strongly believe that having a morning routine is essential to ensuring productivity, and is monumental in your journey to success. The mornings are your time to start the day fresh, new, and on your own terms. If the morning flows smoothly, it gives you momentum and energy to tackle the rest of your day. Start strong, finish strong!

I like order, and I am an excellent planner. I can plan your day to within a minute, and take great joy in doing so. This is the way I try to live my own life, not because I am a control freak or don’t know how to have fun, but because order and routine gives me security. Without it I feel like I am losing my marbles, and to those around me it might even seem so as well. Routines are the easiest way of keeping me focused and in control, and so I use them to keep my life simple and streamlined.

At the beginning of this year I made the decision to focus on self-development as much as I focused on self-care last year. As part of this drive, I bought The 5 a.m. Club by Robin Sharma. Although the story itself didn’t grip me, mostly because of the unlikely characters and impossible situations, the principles that he teaches in the book resonated with me. I found so much truth and inspiration in those pages that the book became a textbook to me. I studied it, making notes and learning phrases, until it felt just as much a part of me as my other routines. Once finished, I made a daily planner based on the principles and tips that he gives in the book. His motto “own your mornings, elevate your life” struck a chord, and I wanted in.

The first thing I did was getting up earlier. 4h45 to be exact. I then get dressed and ready to start my daily exercise routine of about 20 to 40 minutes. He recommends daily exercise that will make you sweat, since this wakes you up, jump starts your heart and sends enough blood to your brain to really energise you. After sweating, I sit down to do my Bible study. If you are not religious, or even spiritual, use this time to reflect on your life and goals. After spending time with God, I use the remainder of my “me-time” (about 60 minutes in total) to focus on self development. That includes watching videos, listening to podcasts, or reading. The time flies by, but time would have done that in anyway. At least now I spend it productively.

Getting up this early every morning has not only freed me from the rat race of trying to cram everything into those few hours I have available, but also opened me up to new experiences. I now have time to do yoga 2 to 3 times a week. I have taken up hobbies - something I never seemed to have time for. I can appreciate the beauty of nature and life in general. A few weeks back, we went away for the long weekend and I had the privilege of experiencing the Bushveld sunrise every. single. morning.

Other benefits that I have noticed:

  • My body is getting stronger as a result of my daily exercise routine

  • I am learning a lot easier, since my brain is fresh and rested when I start to work

  • I am getting a lot more done

  • The work I am putting out is of better quality than before

  • I am closer to God than ever before

  • My mind is less busy, and I find it easier to shut off once I leave the office

Of course there are other physical as well as physiological benefits, but the biggest benefit to me is how great I feel! I am now on day 50 and I am jumping out of bed every morning. It has changed my life, and I hope that you will try it so that your own life can be changed.

So here is my challenge to you:

  1. Get hold of the book and read it. Take notes while reading, and try to make it your own

  2. Start your own morning routine. Keep at it for at least 60 days, after which time it will become a habit and a lifestyle
