My natural journey started a few years ago when I realized that more than half of the things I was putting on my body and my face were chemicals. I could not even pronounce the ingredients, yet someone was trying to convince me that they were safe. I did a bit of research and came up with scary theories. Although not everything seemed plausible or true, I still found enough startling facts to make my decision easy – go natural. In South Africa, the natural movement has not yet picked up enough steam to give us natural options to choose from, from the shelves. If you wanted natural products you had to order them online, or make them yourself. I opted for the “make them yourself” option. This was a tough “try and test” process, with a lot of oopsies and mistakes. A few products I got right after a try or two, and others I am still struggling to figure out. The things I have gotten right, were bath bombs, body butter, hair treatment, and the products needed for my face.

Although I have battled eczema all my life, I have never really had skin problems. That was up until my first pregnancy. After A1 arrived my skin got a bit blotchy – nothing serious, just a little blotchy. Then A2 came, and she changed everything, least of all my skin. My eczema made its way up to my face and settled around my eyes. I tried to treat it but my efforts only seemed to make it worse. After trying numerous treatments, from natural to less natural, I eventually found success and it was not one thing but a bunch of things. Number one, change my diet, number two, change my day and night face cream, number three, switch to natural makeup (if I have to wear makeup at all), and number four, use a natural makeup remover. Using these four things, I fixed my eczema problems, and also sorted out a few other things like fine lines, blemishes and dry spots.

Natural face oil

This post will focus on number two – natural face oil. I used to have a dedicated day and a dedicated night cream. After starting on my natural and zero waste journey, I changed my face creams. Why not use commercial face creams? Because many of the available products contain parabens, mineral oil, Cyclopentasiloxane, imidazolidinyl urea and other problematic ingredients. The Internet is full of numerous natural options and recipes that you can try to make your own creams, using natural and safe ingredients. I tried a few, then settled on making a face oil for use at night, and a face cream/lotion for use during the day. The reason I decided on a face oil is because I felt I could pack more benefits into an oil than a cream. Also, it absorbs better and faster, leaves little oily residue, and I could tweak it according to my (almost) daily needs. Because the oil contains no preservatives, I make it in small quantities. This also means that when I make a new batch, I can tweak the ingredients to suit whatever needs my skin has developed. And it really works out so much cheaper than commercial products!

The ingredients:

Essential oils

These oils are potent, even in small quantities. Each oil has its own properties and benefits, and can be combined to give you the best results. Whether you have dry/oily/sensitive/combination skin, there are oils that you can use. For my skin, I focus on oils that keep me moisturised, renew my skin’s elasticity, and combat fine lines and wrinkles (time is definitely not standing still).

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil works to seal your skin with a protective barrier to keep it from losing moisture. This may help prevent bacterial infections, acne, and dandruff from forming. The oil can also regulate sebum production because it’s so similar to the sebum that your body produces naturally. When you put jojoba oil on your skin, your skin is soothed and moisturised. This sends a signal to your hair and sweat follicles that your skin doesn’t need additional sebum for hydration, keeping the skin from looking oily and helping to prevent acne caused by clogged pores.

Avocado oil

The fatty acids in avocado oil appear to be beneficial for your skin.

Olive oil

Olive oil is packed with anti-aging antioxidants and hydrating squalene, making it superb for hair, skin, and nails. Whether applied to face or body, olive oil will penetrate deep into the skin and provide a long-lasting shield of moisture to keep skin smooth and supple. Used either as a night cream or daily moisturizer, it is best applied to damp skin, when water can help reduce any feeling of greasiness.

Vitamin E oil

Vitamin E oil can block free radicals and replenish lipids which helps slow down the skin's aging process. The ingredient may also help reduce wrinkles and fine lines, and keep skin looking youthful.

Carrot seed oil

Carrot Seed Oil is rich in beta carotene, vitamins A and E and pro-vitamin A. Carrot Seed Oil helps to heal dry, chapped and cracked skin, balances the moisture in skin, and well conditions the hair. It is a good oil for face and neck treatments and may even help to reduce wrinkles.

Deciding to change your beauty routine, especially your skin care regime, to be more natural and then on top of that going the DIY route, can be scary. But it doesn’t have to be hard. Play around, take a few calculated risks, and I am sure you will find something that not only works for you but makes your skin look and feels like it is 10 years younger.
