Diffusing jewellery: Take your essential oils, and their benefits, with you, wherever you go, with an essential oil jewellery piece
Essential oils are one of the few things that calm me down. The other things are Husband, my Mom, and the kids. But since I cannot take them with wherever I go (have tried, people look at me funny) I have to settle for the heavenly scent of my favourite oils.
How do essential oils work? Aromatherapy in short
Our sense of smell is strongly connected to our emotions and memories as our scent receptors are located next to the emotional centres in our brain, the amygdala and hippocampus. That is one of the reasons why aromatherapy is so powerful – using oils can trigger the body’s own healing process to begin, as well as soothe and calm your mind to actually allow the process to take place. Essential oils can also interact with certain hormones, neurotransmitters, or enzymes, resulting in a specific change to our bodies’ chemistry. Oils are powerful, and they have little or no side effects.
Aromatherapy is such an effective treatment (or part of a treatment plan) for a long list of issues and ailments that diffusing jewellery has increased in popularity - they allow you to enjoy the benefits all day long. When it comes to an essential oil diffuser necklace or bracelet, they work in a variety of different ways depending on their design and material used. However, they are all relatively straightforward: just apply 1-3 drops of the essential oil of your choice to the top of the diffuser necklace/porous material and you’re ready to go!
How does diffusing jewellery work?
An essential oil necklace or bracelet (or other type of jewellery piece) works in different ways, depending on its design. Glass aromatherapy necklaces trap oils inside so that they slowly seep out, dispersing the scent. Metals such as pewter or silver make excellent aromatherapy necklaces and typically feature a small scented sponge or pad inside that diffuses the essential oil through tiny holes. Clay and lava rock are other popular materials - you simply add several drops of the essential oil to the bead that absorbs the oil and diffuses the scent. Ensure that the oil is fully absorbed to ensure that clothing and skin never come into contact with undiluted essential oils.
When applying the essential oil, keep in mind:
Apply the essential oil to the part of the necklace that will not come into contact with your clothes (essential oils are oils so they will stain your clothes)
Some oils can last for several days, while others can fade fairly quickly (will also depend on the quality of oil used - we only recommend good quality, A grade therapeutic oils if you want to use the oils for medicinal reasons. If you want to use the jewellery purely for smell, lower grade oils can do the trick) [in SA, we highly recommend Soil Organic Essential oils}
Refresh as needed
What are the benefits of using essential oils?
Improves memory, mental clarity and concentration
Lessen pain (joints and muscles)
Helps treat depression
Improves sleep and can increase energy levels
When I leave the house, and the safe enveloping mist of my diffuser, I wear my diffuser bracelet or necklace. These jewellery pieces containing some sort of bead/velt disc/leather strip or similar that has the ability to absorb the oil and release the scent throughout the day. My favourite piece has a lava bead that is used as the diffusing material. Lava beads are great to use - they are also grounding stones, and are very efficient as scent carriers.
What makes diffusing jewellery so wonderful is the fact that you carry the scent with you the whole time, but it is never overpowering. When you feel overwhelmed, anxious, tired, lethargic or any other emotion that you use the oils to combat, you simply smell the jewellery. The scent will help bring you down. And you smell nice - like applying perfume constantly, but only subtly, if that makes sense. Another benefit - if you choose your jewellery pieces correctly, they are accessories used to complete your look, accentuate your style or give voice to your personality. So much more than just a normal bracelet/necklace.
I love my diffusing jewellery, cannot even think that I went so long without them. When I don’t wear them I feel as if I am depriving myself, neglecting myself and not valuing myself - because that is how good they make me feel. And that alone makes them more than worth it!
If you are keen on buying/making your own diffusing jewellery, here is what you should look out for:
The correct material - lava beads, leather, velt, clay, glass or metal container with a cotton or cloth wick. The correct material will depend on the type of jewellery, the preferred style, as well as the application. Lava beads and leather keeps the scent for longer, velt discs and the jewellery that contain them are usually bigger and the scent dissipates faster, glass can break so you need to steer clear if you tend to bump etc. into things, and metal need to be the correct type or else it can react with the oils.
Comfortability and weight - A good aromatherapy necklace should be light enough to be worn comfortably all day long but still heavy enough to stay put. You also need to consider how easy/difficult it is to re-apply the oil.
Durability - A good essential oil diffuser necklace should also be well constructed from high-quality materials to ensure its durability. Surgical grade stainless steel is the preferred material since it is tarnish resistant, doesn’t interact with the oils, and looks beautiful too.
Length - The length of the aromatherapy necklace as well as whether it is adjustable is something you need to take into consideration. The length will determine how close or far away the essential oil is from your nose and this will affect the aromatherapy benefits you enjoy.
