Give Dad his own custom-made essential oils perfume - zero waste, minimal, natural and simple

Essential Oils for Men

Father’s day is coming up fast, and of course, I want to spoil Husband on this special day. Although I don’t really love these types of days (you know, Mother’s, Valentine’s, etc.) I do love the fact that we have kids who get so enthusiastic about these “celebrations” and so now I just roll with it. If you think about it, Father’s day gives you another very good reason to expose the people you love to more natural ways of living and giving. And on that note – here is a great idea for a Father’s day gift:

Homemade natural perfume for Dad, using manly essential oils.

Of course, this will make Dad smell really amazing, but the use of essential oils have a few other benefits other than great smell. Each essential oil has its own “power”, from moisturising the hair or skin (think beard oil?) to improving concentration, memory, sleep or appetite, to balancing hormones. So by using essential oils as a perfume, you are going deeper than just smelling nice.

Making your own (or Dad’s) perfume might seem daunting, but in actual fact, it cannot be simpler. Using essential oils to make your own perfume can be as easy and simple as dabbing a drop or two in the nape of your neck to blending a few oils and diluting them into a rollerball bottle. For this exercise, we will discuss the different kinds of essential oils that are seen as masculine, or rather that is traditionally preferred by men. Don’t allow this list to dissuade you from using any other oil. Sometimes adding a floral oil (seen as feminine) can actually support and strengthen the manly scents. See this only as a directory giving a bit more information and then decide for yourself. Use your nose, use your knowledge of the person you are making this for, and use what you can find (some oils are notoriously difficult to find, or are very expensive, or are localised). At the end there are two quick methods with a few blend ideas that you can use should you wish to go this gifting route – zero waste, natural, minimal and simplistic.

Without further ado, let us look at some of the different manly essential oils:

Citrus – bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, lime, mandarin, petitgrain, sweet orange, tangerine (naartjie)

Herbaceous – basil, bay (laurel, West Indies), cajeput, carrot seed, catnip, clary sage, coriander, eucalyptus (globulus, lemon, smithii), lavender, lemongrass, oregano, palmarosa, peppermint, rosemary, sage, tea tree, thyme, tagetes (khakibos), fynbos, chamomile (German, Roman, African)

Rich Base Notes – copaiba basalm, frankincense, myrrh, oakmoss, Oakwood, patchouli, Peru basalm, sandalwood, vanilla, vetiver

Spice – allspice, anise, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon leaf (use leaf instead of bark for all topical applications, cinnamon bark is too irritating to put on the skin), clove bud, ginger, nutmeg

Woods – black spruce, cedarwood (atlas, Virginian), cypress, fir needle, juniper berry, pine

DIY natural men's perfume

Below I give you two methods of making Dad’s perfume – a water-based spray method and an oil-based method. The water-based spray perfume will work you out cheaper, but the oil-based one will last longer. It will mostly depend on how Dad uses his perfume, how often, and when does he apply it.

Oil-base ingredients:

• 30ml grapeseed oil (or other carrier oil)

• 2ml essential oil blend (see below)

• 2ml vitamin e oil

• 30ml glass dropper bottle, or rollerball bottle

Water-base ingredients:

• 15ml witch hazel

• 5ml vegetable glycerin (optional)

• 5ml aloe vera gel (optional)

• 4ml essential oil blend (see below. Blend x 2)

• 60ml spray bottle

• Cold filtered water to fill

Oil directions:

1. Add essential oils to the glass bottle, follow with a carrier oil to fill. Cap and gently swish to combine.

2. To use: dab a couple of drops of cologne to your pressure points (i.e. nape of neck, wrists, behind the ears, etc.)

Water spray directions:

1. Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and add water to fill.

2. Shake before use!
