This week, I am turning 33 years old. Apparently, a magical age. A British survey found that 33 is the happiest year of our lives. Jesus’ traditional age when he was crucified and resurrected – 33. According to Al-Ghazali, the dwellers of Heaven will exist eternally in a state of being age 33. Islamic prayer beads are generally arranged in sets of 33, corresponding to the widespread use of this number in dhikr rituals. 33. Significant, happy, important.

Yet, I felt so unfulfilled and completely unprepared to enter a new year of life. After a lot of introspection, I realised I was experiencing a bit of an existential crisis. I was turning 33, the age of meaning, and I had nothing to show for it. No profound wisdom, barely any material possessions, and definitely no deep knowledge of myself. Even after a full year of trying to get back to my own roots and values, I still had no idea who I was or wanted to be. This needed to change, and quickly.

The thing that bothered me the most was the fact that I had nothing that I did purely for me. Sure, I had a lot of things going on, but how many of them fed my soul? I had no hobbies, no obsessions, nothing that made my eyes light up and my soul come on fire. I also had no idea where to start.

I sat down and thought really hard and long about all the things in my life I always said I wanted to do. Not see. Do. I went back to my childhood – what did I enjoy doing then? Never mind being good at something, just purely enjoyment. And then I made a list of 33 things I wanted to try before I turned 34 (because cramming them into the 4 days I have left before turning 33 is impossible). On the list you will also find a few things that I have dreamt about doing for almost my entire life, or goals I have for the immediate future. But mostly things I have no idea if I will like or even continue doing, but they are worth trying just so that I can have a definite answer.

Without further ado, here is my list of 33 things I want to try, start or do before turning 34:
